AKIM is an acronym for the Hebrew words which, translated, mean "Association for the Habilitation of the Mentally Handicapped in Israel." AKIM, founded over 54 years ago, is the largest organization in Israel caring for mentally handicapped, Down syndrome and developmentally disabled children and adults.
It is a population that never loses the need for care. AKIM’s commitment to these individuals and their families is lifelong. In most cases, when the parents of AKIM charges pass away, AKIM becomes their legal guardian.
AKIM maintains supervised living facilities throughout Israel. AKIM trains those who can to hold jobs in both the government and private sectors.
AKIM also maintains support programs for the parents and siblings of our charges. Over 30.000 Mentally Handicapped and 120,000 members of their families benefit from these services. AKIM cares for all Israelis, including Christians and Moslems in need of AKIM services.
AKIM has become a world leader in the care of mentally handicapped individuals enhancing their self-esteem and providing a sense of teamwork, personal achievement, and a confidence that carries over into all areas of their lives.
AKIM has many programs in need of funding. . AKIM would acknowledge sponsorships and contributions in a way most appropriate.
